Architecture and interior architecture services in Helsinki

Services

Futudesign is a multidisciplinary design office in Helsinki, founded in 2012: architecture, interior architecture and renovation. Architects and interior architects work in the same team, so the base building, the spaces and the details are resolved together. Projects range from a single interior to a whole city block.

Architecture and renovation

We design new buildings and rework existing ones. Our particular strength is the development of inner-city properties and demanding infill construction — projects where a new use has to be found inside an existing, often protected, frame.

Aleksanterinkatu 13 turned a listed building from 1900 into a hybrid retail and office property; marble removed during demolition was reworked into the kitchen islands of the finished building. Scandic Grand Central Helsinki was built inside Saarinen’s Central Railway Station and won Concrete Façade of the Year 2021.

In property development projects we are involved from the first concept through to completion. In many projects we take responsibility for both the architecture and the interior architecture, but we work flexibly in whichever role the project needs.

Interior architecture

Offices, restaurants and bars, retail spaces, schools and day-care centres, museums and exhibition design — and homes for private clients. Where catalogue products will not do, we design the furniture and fixed elements ourselves.

Workplaces are the largest part of our interior work: the Fiskars Group campus in Espoo, Supercell’s headquarters in Wood City, Krogerus and its later extension, Dittmar & Indrenius, Miltton House and Bain & Company. A workplace project runs from brief to completed fit-out, and the people who will use the space are involved along the way — surveys, workshops, and furniture pilots that employees test before anything is ordered.

Futudesign was named Interior Architecture Firm of the Year 2023 by the Finnish Association of Interior Architects (SIO).

How we work

The same team stays with a project from brief through concept and developed design to the site phase. Objectives, quality standards and sustainability targets are agreed with the client at the start and tracked to the end.

We involve the people who will use the space. Listening to the client and to end users is how we make sure the finished result supports the way they actually work — and how a project keeps its ambition through to the last detail.

Wellbeing and sustainability are not separate services. Lighting, acoustics, ergonomics and material choices are part of the design from the first sketch, and the long life and reuse of existing structures and materials is the starting point of every renovation.

We use current design technology where it makes the work better: BIM modelling in ArchiCAD, parametric design in Rhino and Grasshopper for complex geometry and fast option testing, AI-assisted CAD workflows, and 3D visualisation and VR so that decisions are made on something you can actually see.
