Senate Square Lighting Poles

Our competition entry ‘Happy Together’ won the first prize in a design competition for new lighting poles for Helsinki Senate Square. The Square and its surrounding buildings form a unique and cohesive example of Neoclassical architecture which is one of the Finland’s most famous and photographed tourist attractions.

The Lighting poles in Senate Square have always resembled the the design style of their time period. The Vision of the new design is to create a subtle and inconspicuous design that blends in to the prestigious surroundings yet has its own distinctive contemporary style.

The Design of the lighting poles draw their concept from the axiality of the square and the cruciform plan of Helsinki Cathedral. The Cross section of the poles helps to conceal some of the lighting equipment when viewed from direction of the square and make the poles structures look more streamlined and slender.
