Turku Market Square Buildings

The new buildings are set back from the street line of Yliopistonkatu, positioned behind the central axis of the Orthodox Church designed by C.L. Engel. This preserves the current longitudinal views along Yliopistonkatu and maintains the prominent urban role of the Orthodox Church in the surroundings of the Market Square.

The placement of the buildings on the plot allows for the preservation of the magnificent old trees and provides space for planting new ones in the same location along Yliopistonkatu. Additionally, the essential vehicle access route to the main entrance of the Orthodox Church is secured.

Thanks to the recessed positioning from the street line, it is both visually acceptable and justifiable to construct the new buildings at the same height as the Orthodox Church. The heights of the new buildings align with the varied and historically layered building stock around the Market Square.

The clear architecture of the buildings, their harmonious proportions, and the use of high-quality façade materials create a thoughtful ensemble with the neoclassical Orthodox Church. The façade materials of the new buildings include light plaster, natural stone, and copper for the roof levels. Wooden-framed windows and doors add timeless quality and dignity to the buildings.

The architecture of the new buildings is grounded in classical design language and modern use of materials. Well-considered details connect the buildings firmly to the present day.

The buildings are designed to be as adaptable as possible, allowing their use to be modified as needed over the coming centuries.
