Balderin Talo

Our proposal for the transformation of the historic Balder House involves the clarification of its layered spatial plan using a palette of Finnish natural materials. The proposal is based on three key gestures: the addition of a covered lobby area, connecting the existing floors with new accessible lifts, and the addition of underground bathing facilities beneath the courtyard. The aim of the proposal is to revitalise the over 200 years old landmark through the insertion of new uses, like the spa, a restaurant, a bookshop and event spaces on the upper floors, while preserving its original character through context sensitive material choices and detailing.
