Attic Apartment
A complete renovation of a private attic apartment in Meilahti. Located in a 1951 building, the apartment was added as a conversion in 1985. Its design differs from the original mid-century units, giving it a distinct character within the neighbourhood. The area’s leafy urban fabric, restrained mid-20th-century architecture and calm atmosphere informed the design approach.
The apartment’s large skylights, exposed structures and 1980s detailing provided the framework for the new interior. The client wished for a colourful home with minimal use of white, leading to a room-specific colour concept. Electrical outlets and light switches were selected in different hues to correspond with each room’s palette—an uncommon but precise detail that reinforces visual coherence. Circulation was refined to achieve a more intuitive and functional layout.
An extensive suite of built-in furniture was designed, including the kitchen, radiator covers, storage elements and a custom shower wall. The kitchen, realised without upper cabinets at the client’s request, establishes a clean and open impression. In the entrance hall, a suspended storage unit anchored to the ceiling structure forms a backdrop for a significant artwork belonging to the resident.
The homeowner is an art and design enthusiast, and the interior was conceived as a “colourful canvas” for his collection. The client was closely involved throughout the process, sourcing specialised craftsmen skilled in trimless door and window solutions and selecting vintage door hardware installed throughout the home. The result reflects both his commitment and the high level of craftsmanship achieved across the project.
